The 12th Anniversary bash for the Raleigh Drum Circle was a blast! The format was better than ever and allowed alot more open dancing this year with some performance mixed in between! There were great raffle prizes, bellydance, and even fire dance. A big Thanks to Andrew Shakinovsky and Mara Cohen from the Lost Nomads for providing me with Middle Eastern Rhythms to dance too, Greg Whitt for letting me share my art again, and Ronnie Pulley for the video clip!

RDC started as the World Percussion Club at NCSU. Within six months we partnered with Lake Johnson Park to meet the demand for a public rhythm event in Raleigh. We met on their shores for many years before the launch of the Raleigh Hoop Jam at Pullen Park as a collaborative occasion for drumming and flow arts. The community has evolved and grown over the years. Many fantastic teachers and performers have sprung from and grown with this community of rhythm enthusiasts.

The Raleigh Drum Circle Birthday Bash has been an annual occasion to showcase some of these talented folks and their great work out in the world. We hold this party at our regularly scheduled hoop jam, but it’s a very different occasion from the regularly scheduled programming.

In years past we’ve set up the stage with lighting and sound systems where folks can strut their stuff in front of the community, but this year there’s SOMETHING NEW! Instead of putting performances on the stage, we’re putting them IN THE DRUM CIRCLE!!! Dancers and drummers will bring their talents right to the heart of the community. Performances will be limited to one number. Microphones will be available if you need one. To sign up as a performer, contact GREG by email to gregory@drumforchange.com

As always we’ll start at 6:30. We’re also having a POTLUCK — bring something yummy to share (we’ll take care of plates and utensils, but bring your own beverage). Please include a label with contents so folks with restrictive diets will know what they can eat. The park will provide tables and chairs. Munch when you feel like it; there’s no particular timetable.

WE’RE GIVING AWAY STUFF! There’s a raffle to support the cost of maintaining our website, marketing materials, hoops, and instruments. It’s our only fundraiser of the year. Be on the lookout for a list of awesome stuff you might win. If you’d like to donate to the raffle, contact TONY by email to info@drumsticktony.com

At 7pm we’ll start lacing performances into the drum jam, so be ready for transitions: you might be invited to play along, you might be invited to simply listen for a few minutes. Around 8pm we’ll shift things again and open up the drum circle in a SOUL TRAIN STYLE dance-down-the-middle shake-your-groove-thang hoop-your-heart-out prance-your-poi and strut-your-staff event! EVERYONE is invited and encouraged to take a turn down through the groove and to get to the heart of the matter — literally and figuratively.

Final Fridays return (Spring – Fall) from 8 – 10pm: Rhythmicity will be playing in the Upper Level in front of the Waverly Arts Studio at Waverly Place in Cary at the corner of Kildaire Farm Rd. and Tyron Rd. Drummers, dancers, hoopers, and spinners are welcome to join in! This is a family friendly event. Come enjoy the evening and see some of the new shops and restaurants at the newly renovated shopping center!

This month the Lost Nomads were invited to play with Rhythmicity at their Final Friday Drum and Dance Jam at Waverly Place. There was African Dance and Music, Middle Eastern music and Bellydance and I even dusted off my old fire fans!

DAY 2

Just because one day wasn’t enough we decided to go their twice! No seriously, the Lost Nomads were playing at 3 and they are awesome! Plus I did have fun on Saturday, but did not get to see everything. The music was great, some of our Turkish friends from the ATA-NC were there, so they helped me motivate people to get up and dance about half way through the set. Lots of kids dancing and having fun. The kids wanted to see the “Africa” booth so we made sure we did that and learned about there. I only wish I had time to get a Henna tattoo. Russia was my favorite bazaar with all the different babushkas. Just before we left, we checked out the dance and demo booth one last time, but whatever great act was in there, just finished up, so we headed over to the drumming circle to see our friend Greg Whitt facilitate a fun drum circle for kids. We saw a guy on a giant unicycle and that was it.

Rhythmicity

Rhythmicity is starting their monthly drumming event held at Crossroads in front of the Coffee and Crepes. It is always held the last Friday of the month, (weather permitting of course). They are a West African drumming group and will play some Middle Eastern rhythms for the dancers as well. This is always a family friendly event. Here is the info:

Drumming and Dancing at Crosssroads March 25th, 7- 9:30ish. Feel free to bring friends and a drum if you want. We will have extra percussion for you to join in!

Dancers, hoopers, and spinners are always welcome.

Raleigh Drum Circle 6th Anniversary Bash

We had a blast at the Drum Circle Bash this month! Andrew, John, Brian, and Aaron did Middle Eastern Drumming and Jenny and I danced. We did some veil, sword, cane. All was improved. There was also Native American Drumming and storytelling, Sufi whirling, songs, poetry, African drumming and the drum circle. Fire poi, hooping, ect.
